Much progress has been made to protect patients who act as subjects in clinical research trials, but there are still difficulties in ensuring that the interests of the individual are not sacrificed in favour of the greater long-term good of the many. This paper argues that informed consent and providing adequate information for the patient are essential, but only part of the picture.
