Data on translational regulation of stored mRNAs in oocytes, embryos, and differentiated tissues are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of untranslated mRNA regions, which bind with certain proteins involved in the function of individual mRNAs. Examples are given of the spatial and temporal translational regulation of several mRNAs in embryo development.
