Beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs have been found to be effective antihypertensive agents of similar efficacy to sympathetic inhibitory drugs and methyldopa. They have the advantage of not causing postural or exercise hypotension. While the antihypertensive effect is a function of beta-receptor blockade, the precise mode of action is unknown.
