Ten cases of visual loss ranging from total blindness to a brief period of transient ischemic attacks occurred after cardiopulmonary bypass. Brain scan studies indicated occipital cortical infarction as the cause. Thrombosis, embolization, and selective laminar cortical necrosis due to cerebral anoxia were possible mechanisms.
