Critical care nurses must have knowledge of normal physiologic changes during pregnancy to assess the obstetric patient appropriately. Multiple adaptations occur during pregnancy that place the woman at risk should medical or obstetric complications occur. At no time in a woman's life does she undergo the vast system changes that she experiences during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
