Abstract

The author discusses various aspects of the control of bilharziasis by the application of molluscicides, including the chemicals to be used, the preparation of molluscicidal suspensions or emulsions, the rate, season, frequency and methods of application, tests for evaluating the results of treatment, factors affecting the efficacy of molluscicides and the repopulation of snails after treatment, and the cost of molluscicidal operations. In addition, he reviews briefly some of the encouraging results obtained in the field with three of the most effective molluscicides-sodium pentachlorophenate, dinitro-cyclohexylphenol and copper sulfate-and puts forward a number of suggestions as to future research on this method of snail control.
