Histological and histochemical methods were used to study morpho-functional properties in the development of the sheep placenta. General regularities of developmental changes in the structure of the placenta and its carbohydrate and protein metabolism have been found which speaks of the regular change of periods of the intrauterine development, related with changing the periods of the intrauterine feeding. The giant cells of the chorion were shown to participate in metabolic processes, in addition to the histolytic activity which was shown by presence of carbohydrate (glycogen, glyco- and mucoproteins, acid mucopolysaccharides) and protein compounds.
