Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the measurement of the occlusal contact area (surface) using commercially available equipment and computer programs for image processing and analysis. A stable occlusal record was made using an addition curing silicone rubber putty and was placed on a light source onto which a video camera was focused. This image was digitized and standard thickness records were used to calibrate the appropriate threshold for measurement of contact and near contact surfaces. Differences between individuals and within individuals with and without their partial dentures are large. This method has the potential to be a powerful tool in the study of occlusion.
