The history of ophthalmic anesthesiology is closely related to the development of ophthalmology. Specific needs during ophthalmic procedures bring about on further improvement of effectiveness of local and general anesthesia, since both methods are in use for ophthalmic surgery. It is hard to decide, which one is the better and more suitable for the patient, as well as the surgeon. Individual choice adequate to the certain patient and certain clinical image requires close cooperation between ophthalmic surgeon and anesthesiologist.
