While thymine or N6-(4-methoxybenzoyl)adenine terminated bis(4-alkoxy)-substituted bis(phenylethynyl)benzene monomers show no liquid crystalline behaviour by themselves, mixing the complementary nucleobase monomers together results in the formation of thermotropic liquid crystalline phases.
