Acute embolic occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery is associated with a high mortality rate. Selective thrombolytic therapy appears to be effective in the treatment of mesenteric thromboembolism particularly in elderly patients with a high operative risk. We describe a case of subacute mesenteric artery occlusion in a 69-year-old man treated successfully by selective intraarterial infusion of urokinase two days after he became symptomatic.
