Insufficient milk supply syndrome is a complex phenomenon and a major reason reported by mothers worldwide for early termination of breastfeeding. A review of the literature suggests possible explanations for insufficient milk but fails to indicate conclusively why it is such a problem. Nursing management of real and perceived insufficient milk syndrome (IMS) is an important part of encouraging breastfeeding success.
