To investigate the alteration of the gene HSD17B4 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its potential significance.
The mRNA expression and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of HSD17B4 in 40 primary esophageal tumors were detected by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and microsatellite analysis with the intragenic marker D5S1384 of the gene.
The frequencies of allelic loss of D5S1384 and the rate of down-regulation of gene HSD17B4 were 46.2% and 62.5%, respectively.
HSD17B4 may be a candidate tumor suppressor gene associated with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

采用逆转录聚合酶链反应(RT-PCR)及基因内标记D5S1384的微卫星分析,检测40例原发性食管肿瘤中HSD17B4的mRNA表达及杂合性缺失(LOH)情况。
D5S1384的等位基因缺失频率和HSD17B4基因下调率分别为46.2%和62.5%。
HSD17B4可能是与食管鳞状细胞癌相关的候选抑癌基因。
