Autologous blood transfusion (ATS) is now a common procedure used in a variety of health care settings. ATS can occur during several stages in a patient's care and may be administered through a variety of methods. This article discusses the development of ATS, its advantages and disadvantages, issues surrounding its use, and the types of ATS currently in use. Examples of several methods and nursing considerations for management of ATS are presented.
