To evaluate the usefulness and accuracy of fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of parotid gland tumors.
We reviewed files of all patients who underwent parotidectomy for various parotid pathologies at Aga Khan University Hospital. Study design included a comparison between results of preoperative FNAC with final histopathological diagnosis. Galen & Ganbino method was used to calculate sensitivity and specificity of FNAC.
Among 50 patients reviewed, there was one false positive and 3 false negative results reported on FNAC. This gives a sensitivity of FNAC for reporting malignancy to be 74% and specificity to rule out malignancy 97%. No significant complications were reported while performing the procedure.
FNAC is a safe and effective modality in diagnosis and treatment planning of patients with parotid tumors.

我们回顾了在阿迦汗大学医院因各种腮腺疾病接受腮腺切除术的所有患者的病历。研究设计包括术前细针穿刺抽吸活检(FNAC)结果与最终组织病理学诊断结果的比较。采用盖伦和甘比诺方法计算FNAC的敏感性和特异性。
在回顾的50例患者中,FNAC报告有1例假阳性和3例假阴性结果。这使得FNAC报告恶性肿瘤的敏感性为74%,排除恶性肿瘤的特异性为97%。在进行该操作时未报告重大并发症。
FNAC是腮腺肿瘤患者诊断和治疗规划中的一种安全有效的方法。
