Safeguarding mutual support between generations is vital in an aging society and leads inevitably to a number of sociopolitical challenges. Not only material solidarity, but also immaterial transfers within and outside the family are called for. But in order to develop a sustainable idea of generational solidarity, the traditional definitions of generations on the one hand and of solidarity on the other should be questioned. The following contribution describes main aspects of generational relations and brings up concepts of event based generations and horizontal solidarity for discussion. In the light of a demographic ethic, prerequisites for a promising cohesion between adults with and without children are derived.
