Both growth hormone (GH) and glucocorticoids are important in regulating blood glucose levels. In addition to their direct effects on intermediary metabolism and on blood glucose, glucocorticoids have an important role in normal GH synthesis and release. They modulate somatostatinergic tone and GH releasing hormone (GHRH) receptor synthesis. Additionally, they have direct effects on GH messenger (mRNA) synthesis and stabilization. This paper will discuss the evidence supporting these interactions and how they apply clinically to diagnosing the cause of hypoglycemia in a newborn infant.
