A synoptic perspective of the history, current status and identity of the profession overseas and in South Africa is provided. Reflections are offered on aspects of training including specialization, research and continuing education. Attention is focused on the issues which could affect the demand and the nature of the delivery of professional service in the light of a changing South Africa. Factors are considered for the South African Speech-Language-Hearing Association's strategic forward planning to meet current and future needs of the profession.
