Pressure ulcers cause distress to patients and give health professionals cause for concern because of the dramatic effects on patients' quality of life, as well as the implications for resources (Hampton and Collins 2001). By understanding the changes in tissue physiology that take place and the complications of sitting, nurses can make pressure ulcer prevention part of their practice.
