Abstract

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the present study was to determine the modifications in masseter muscle thickness before and after interdisciplinary orthodontic, oromyofunctional and surgical treatment of class III dentofacial skeletal deformities (DFSD).

DESIGN

Fifteen patients with class III DFSD participated in the study, denoted P1 group before the interdisciplinary treatment and P2 group (same patients) 6-8 months after surgery. Fifteen individuals with no DFSD were used as the control group. Bilateral ultrasonography (US) of the masseter muscle under resting and biting conditions was performed in the three groups.

RESULTS

There was a significant difference (P<0.01) for all muscles tested between the control, P1 and P2 groups, with greater thickness for controls, intermediate thickness for P2, and the lowest thickness for P1 in all situations evaluated.

CONCLUSION

We conclude that there was an increase in masseter muscle thickness after surgical correction of DFSD accompanied by interdisciplinary treatment, although the values were still lower than those observed in the control group.

目的

本研究的目的是确定在对Ⅲ类牙颌面骨骼畸形(DFSD)进行正畸、口肌功能和外科联合治疗前后咬肌厚度的变化。

设计

15例Ⅲ类DFSD患者参与本研究,在联合治疗前为P1组,术后6 - 8个月(同一批患者)为P2组。15名无DFSD的个体作为对照组。三组均在静息和咬合状态下对咬肌进行双侧超声检查(US)。

结果

在所有测试肌肉中,对照组、P1组和P2组之间存在显著差异(P<0.01),在所有评估情况下,对照组厚度最大,P2组厚度居中,P1组厚度最小。

结论

我们得出结论,在对DFSD进行外科矫正并联合跨学科治疗后,咬肌厚度增加,尽管其数值仍低于对照组。
