This is a retrospective study of all patients admitted to Basma Teaching Hospital with a diagnosis of fever of unknown origin (FUO). The study took place from January 1995 to December 2001. Fifty-two patients fulfilled the criteria of FUO. Infections were responsible for 26 cases (50%), malignancy for eight cases (15%), connective tissue disorder for six cases (12%) and others for 12 cases (23%). Infections remain the most common causes of FUO in Jordan, mainly tuberculosis, brucellosis and typhoid fever.
