The relationship of the man-made ambient air pollution to the primary incidence of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and disease-caused anemias was studied in the adult urban population. Man-caused ambient air pollution was established to serve as an etiological factor contributing to a reduction in leukocytic phagocytic activity and predisposing to the higher primary incidence of disease-caused iron-deficiency and IDA.
