Beginning with a concerned society, from individuals, to visiting nurse associations, and to publicly traded corporations, home care and hospice have been meaningful threads in the American fabric for over a hundred years. Today, advances in technology, a burgeoning regulatory environment, and universal health care cost concerns make continued change expected and certain. While external health care environmental pressures incessantly shape the evolution of home care and hospice, a central value lives on in the heart of what we do as caregivers, in what is nowtermed our "industry". It is a value we must safeguard from evolutionary extinction.
