By summer 2007 smoking in all enclosed public places will be banned in the UK, while in October the legal minimum age to buy tobacco is to rise from 16 to 18 in England and Wales. As well as protecting against environmental tobacco smoke the government believes an additional 600,000 smokers will quit as a result of the ban. Through the NHS smokers can access support to help them quit. Nurses in all settings have an important role to play in educating and supporting smokers to quit.
