A review of the literature, interviews with nursing executives in community and tertiary care facilities, and consideration of courses at one Canadian university are the basis for the development of a sample graduate level nursing program with an administration major. Course inclusion was predicated by the defined roles of practising nursing executives. Future trends in health care were considered as they affect needs for programming.
