In this study, we review the contribution of ambulatory urodynamic studies (AUM) to the diagnosis and management of symptomatic women. We found that ambulatory urodynamics had particular value in establishing the amount, timing and mechanism of incontinence during near normal patient activity. In 77% symptomatic women with normal cystometry, AUM diagnosed the cause of incontinence and provided clear added value. We conclude that in our 12-year study, AUM is a valuable and effective second-line investigation for diagnosing the cause of incontinence in difficult cases.
