So far, most work in the field of zone melting has been done on a small scale, use of heavier than 100-pound ingots of certain metals notwithstanding. However, there is no basic reason why tons rather than pounds cannot be treated. Continuous refiners have been designed and operated, and a suitable design theory exists (3).
