Speed of access to primary care is important to patients with straightforward needs but for more serious problems trusted, relational continuity of care is more valued. GP practices need to prioritise relational continuity in providing care for patients, improving their teamwork and taking account of patient preferences. Managers must balance access targets with continuity.
