Studies on hypophysectomized immature female rats showed that the so-called tibia-test was highly specific only in testing the relatively pure preparations of growth hormone. Use of this test for determination of the content of growth hormone in the hypophysis or in the medium after the hypophysis incubation could lead to serious mistakes, since the majority of hypophysis hormones and many of the hormones of the peripheral endocrine glands were capable of influencing the width of the tibial cartilage in the hypophysectomized animals.
