Ten years of external quality assessment in France.

Since 1979, a national external quality assessment (EQA) scheme has been conducted in France by the Laboratoire National de la Santé. At present, as many as 4990 laboratories participate in the EQA. The general organization and strategies of this national scheme are briefly described in this paper and a few examples are given to illustrate its impact on laboratory performance.
