Most types of human and animal motor behaviour are spatially oriented. Studies of the fish gravity orientation system are proving particularly valuable for understanding the functional organization of this system in higher animals. In particular, the development of in vitro central nervous system preparations with gravity sensory organs that exhibit a 'fictive' space orientation behaviour has led to some important new discoveries.
