The major technique of interventional angiology of the arteries of the thigh is percutaneous balloon dilatation (angioplasty). In the case of short stenoses and occlusions, the primary results and long-term success of these techniques are very good. In order to be able to successfully treat long, highly calcified, eccentric and fresh lesions using the percutaneous approach, numerous new procedures have been developed. These include local fibrinolysis, aspiration of thromboembolic material, ablation of atherosclerotic plaques using an endovascular knife, the drilling open of occlusions, the use of the laser, and implantation of vascular endoprostheses.
