To evaluate the application of ThinPrep liquid-based cytology (LBC) and present our experience using LBC in the diagnosis of metastatic tumors in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples.
We examined 38 cytologic specimens of CSF, processed by ThinPrep technique. Of these, 18 presented with a previously diagnosed primary malignancy. Various immunocytochemical markers were performed.
ThinPrep technology provided preservation of cytomorphologic features, high cellularity per slide and clear background. Analysis revealed 8 breast carcinomas, 5 lung carcinomas, 4 lymphomas, 3 adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract, 1 squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix and 1 urinary bladder carcinoma. Fifteen samples were negative for malignancy.
CSF cytology is the only examination that verifies the presence of malignancy. Thin monolayer technology is suggested as an appropriate diagnostic method for metastatic tumors in CSF in everyday routine and seems to be a valuable tool for further management and planning of treatment.

薄层技术能够保留细胞形态学特征,每张玻片细胞数量多且背景清晰。分析显示有8例乳腺癌、5例肺癌、4例淋巴瘤、3例胃肠道腺癌、1例子宫颈鳞状细胞癌和1例膀胱癌。15份样本未发现恶性肿瘤。
脑脊液细胞学检查是唯一能证实恶性肿瘤存在的检查。薄层单层技术被认为是日常诊断脑脊液转移性肿瘤的合适方法,似乎是进一步治疗管理和规划的有价值工具。
