This article aims to help healthcare providers understand the emerging trend of disclosure and apology after an adverse event. Understanding the difference between saying "I'm sorry" that accepts responsibility and that which expresses empathy is essential. However, it is only part of the process: planning is required pre- and post-event. This article also provides an introduction to the framework necessary to enhance the healthcare provider's potential for success with patients and with liability reduction.
