We studied a case of a woman without previous risks of HIV infection. This woman was transfused for obstetric reasons in April, 1986. Two units of blood were provided by paid donors. The newborn was breastfed for only two weeks. After twelve months symptoms of HIV showed up. Resembling symptoms appeared in the daughter 36 months later breastfed. Both were classified as having AIDS 3 years after the birth. The husband remains negative ten months after his last sexual contact. In conclusion, vertical transmission of HIV through breastfeeding is possible and perhaps should be more closely evaluated.
