Having your ED linked to a computerized patient information exchange network, in which you can pull up the past history of patients presenting to your department, can offer financial advantages and improve quality of care. By enabling you to track "frequent fliers," you can identify patients who require a primary care provider. By arranging for such care, you can reduce the readmission rate for these patients. By learning which imaging tests the patient recently had, you might be able to avoid redundant testing. The computerized record of the patient's past treatment can help ensure continuity of care in terms of existing conditions and an accurate record of medications.
