Although almost half of U.S. children aged 5 to 17 years are caries-free, less than 5 percent of adults 18 to 65 years have no tooth decay. It appears that caries attacks persist unrelentingly throughout life. Continuous caries prevention, therefore, is essential, especially in an aging population.
