A major reason for seeking treatment abroad is lower costs for work not funded by the NHS. In 2007, more than 200 patients were seen in NHS hospitals after surgery overseas, three quarters of whom had complications. An EU directive will make it easier for patients to have overseas treatment funded by the NHS.
