The study included 60 men (mean age 33.2 +/- 1.6 years) with grade I arterial hypertension and 25 age-matched practically healthy men. They were subjected to veloergometer test with an increasing load till submaximum rise in the heart rate, condition limiting further exercise, excessive AP elevation, dyspnea, or fatigue. Increased oxygen consumption by myocardium in excess of metabolic requirements of the organism was documented at rest and under standard load. Criteria (increase of double product, pressure load index, cardiac load index) for the work done by myocardium to overcome peripheral resistance and for functional remodeling have been developed.
