Not only has the decision of the NMC's Conduct and Competence Committee to strike off Nurse Haywood from the register caused significant media interest, but it has also angered many nurses. In trying to protect vulnerable patients, the central role of the NMC, it has incensed nurses who are frequently seen as the patient's only advocate, and may have even deterred some from attempting to highlight poor care.
