The most important diagnostic steps in the initial, non-specialist evaluation of arthritis are the careful anamnesis, clinical examination and blood tests for inflammation parameters. These steps are described individually. The discussion further includes comments on serological and synovial fluid analyses, the interpretation of which, due to their complexity, now increasingly lie in the hands of rheumatologists.
