A 5.2 mm self-sealing tunnel incision was used during phacoemulsification and implantation of a 5 x 6 mm poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lens in 100 cases. No sutures were used for closure. Keratometry readings and vision were followed for one year. At one month postoperatively keratometry and refraction were stable and at one year postoperatively there was a small against-the-rule shift in cylinder.
