Discussing adverse side effects of the use of dental materials and auxiliary products used in dentistry, dentist and patients should be considered as two different groups at risk. Many of the products are chemically and biologically reactive which may lead to unwanted side effects. For the dental profession there is a risk of occupational exposure to certain products, which may result in toxicity reactions. Occupational skin contact with certain chemical compounds in wet work may facilitate hypersensitivity reactions. To avoid adverse side effects, regulations have been formulated in order to protect personal. Patients may have only a minor risk of toxicity reactions due to exposure. Hypersensitivity reactions, however, occur rather often. Different risk of dentist and patients is mainly due to the route of exposure and exposure time.
