In order to define the characteristic features as to how the Soviet press highlight the problems of the community mental health and psychiatric services, the authors made a contact analysis of the publications on the given subject, issued by the central press (altogether 16 books and 56 papers during 1987-89). It has been established as a result that 32% of the publications have an evidently marked "antipsychiatric" nuánce. In most materials, subjective viewpoints of the author are related as an established public opinion. The authors of the present paper arrive at the conclusion that psychiatrists should activate the popularization of psychiatric knowledge. The data obtained during mass community polls showing genuine distribution of opinions in respect to the mental health services are required as well.
