Abstract

beta-Blockers were first described in 1964 and were developed for the treatment of angina pectoris and arrhythmias. Subsequently, indications have broadened to encompass a multitude of clinical scenarios, with hypertension high on the list. Here, the authors consider the extended debate on this topic and discuss the mechanisms of action for traditional and newer beta-blockers and their role in hypertension management.
