ABSTRACT Health care providers who counsel patients on contraception require current knowledge of contraceptive technology. Current evidence and recommendations support the use of the intrauterine device in a broad range of women with few contraindications. In this clinical review, evidence is presented supporting the safety and acceptability of the intrauterine device in young, nulliparous women and highlighting factors associated with lack of intrauterine device use in the United States.
