Edward Selleck Hare (1812-1838), the first to describe a case of cervical tumour in association with ocular symptoms (Horner's syndrome), died at the age of 26-the day before his paper was published-from typhus contracted in his wards at the Staffordshire General Infirmary. The details of his short career are described and his paper is reproduced in facsimile. He has no claim to priority over Horner, since he was not aware that the ocular symptoms in the case which he described were due to paralysis of the sympathetic.
