A commercial balloon-borne sun-seeker has been improved in several ways. Power consumption is reduced by using transistorized circuits and solid state switches instead of tubes and magnetic clutches. Silicon cells used as fine pointing sensors are moved near the entrance slit of the spectrometer to eliminate the effects of optical misalignment.
