Traditional concepts of long-term residential treatment of children are adapted for use on short-term psychiatric units. A model of milieu therapy is proposed which emphasizes the fostering of discriminate interpersonal attachments. Specific interventions, the use of limits, and the role of other therapies are discussed in the context of this model.
