Despite widespread acceptance of screening and treatment of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), review panels have suggested that there is insufficient evidence to assess the benefits versus harms for the treatment of GDM. However, a well-designed randomized trial (MFMU Network) has now demonstrated clear benefits to the treatment of mild GDM. This evidence provides the basis for change as it effects the perceptions of healthcare advisories and payors who consider the merits of treating GDM.
